Our Work

Rushton Dog Rescue is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs in need.

We focus on saving dogs from abusive or neglectful situations weather that be from owners or uk dog pounds. Once in our care, each dog receives veterinary treatment, nutritious food, and the emotional support necessary to recover from their past experiences.

Running a dog rescue sanctuary like Rushton Dog Rescue involves numerous tasks to ensure the well-being of the animals and the smooth operation of the facility. Here’s a general overview of day-to-day operations:

1. Animal Care

  • Feeding and Watering: Ensuring all dogs have fresh water and are fed a proper, nutritious diet. Some dogs may require special diets or medications.
  • Exercise and Enrichment: As our name implies our dogs have the run of Freedom arm and are out for over 5 hours a day, more or less weather permitting.
  • Grooming and Hygiene: Regular grooming (bathing, brushing, nail trimming), cleaning kennels, bedding, and ensuring hygiene standards to prevent the spread of disease.
  • Health Monitoring: Observing dogs for signs of illness, injury, or behavioural issues. Administering medications, handling vet appointments, vaccinations, and spaying/neutering as needed.

2. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Maintaining a clean and sanitary environment for the dogs, which includes daily cleaning of kennels, food areas, and common spaces.
  • Facility Repairs and Upkeep: Addressing any necessary repairs to fences, kennels, and equipment to ensure a safe environment for both staff and animals.
  • Waste Management: Proper disposal of waste, keeping the grounds free of animal waste and trash to avoid contamination and pests.

3. Dog Intake and Rehabilitation

  • Assessment: Evaluating new arrivals for health, temperament, and behavioural issues. Quarantining sick or injured animals until they are healthy.
  • Rehabilitation: Working with dogs that may need behavioural training, socialisation, or recovery from past trauma. This can involve working with trainers or behaviourists.
  • Medical Care: Providing necessary veterinary care for sick or injured dogs and ensuring all are vaccinated, dewormed, and treated for parasites.

4. Rehoming

  • Screening Potential Owners: Interviewing and assessing individuals or families interested in homing a dog to ensure a good fit.
  • Home Visits: Conducting home checks to make sure the potential home is suitable for the specific dog.
  • Rehoming Paperwork and Follow-ups: Handling rehoming contracts and ensuring follow up on the dog’s well-being post-rehoming.

5. Fundraising and Public Engagement

  • Fundraising Efforts: Organising events, crowdfunding campaigns, and donor outreach to raise money for the rescue’s operating costs, medical expenses, and facility improvements.
  • Social Media and Website Management: Keeping the public informed about the sanctuary’s dogs, events, and needs through platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and the sanctuary’s website.
  • Public Awareness and Education: Engaging with the community through events, school visits, or educational programs about dog rescue, responsible pet ownership, and animal welfare.

6. Networking and Partnerships

  • Working with Other Rescues: Coordinating with other rescues or shelters to help dogs in need, especially for overflow situations or specialised cases.
  • Transport Coordination: Managing the transportation of dogs and supplies to and from the rescue center.

Day-to-day operations involve a balance of animal care, facility management, and public outreach, all with the goal of providing the best possible life for the rescued dogs until they find their forever homes.
